Lost in thought, he began comparing life to a card game\u2014some people get lucky draws, others face setbacks. That metaphor sparked something. Alex, a newcomer to game design, leaned into simplicity \u2014 drawing inspiration from <em>1,000 Bornes (one thousand milestones)<\/em>. He even taught himself Illustrator to create the visuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From festival tables to crowdfunding triumph<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple took their prototype to the Cannes Games Festival in 2018, securing a last-minute spot at the Off. The feedback ? \u00ab Too nice \u00bb. Originally titled <em>La Course au Bonheur (the road to happiness)<\/em>, the game evolved \u2014 new name, edgier cards (think \u201cTsunami\u201d and \u201cAttack\u201d), and a sharper tone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 34%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that year, they launched a crowdfunding campaign on Ulule, a French website. It funded 500 copies. Then came the hustle : Alex went door-to-door in Montpellier, pitching the game to local shops. Slowly, orders grew. A distributor signed on. YouTubers like Coline began spreading the word. The themes range from current events (<em>Apocalypse<\/em>) to fantasy (<em>Fantastique<\/em>), each designed to enrich the base game\u2014not just pad the catalog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab We\u2019ll never release an expansion just for the sake of it, says Margot. If we run out of inspiration, we\u2019ll stop \u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New Chapter with Blackrock Games&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After partnering with Blackrock Games for international distribution in 2024, <em>Smile Life<\/em> officially joined their French catalog in 2025.
